San Diego combines the benefits, and attractions of living in a big city with year-round idyllic weather. It is perfect place to learn English while living an active, outdoor lifestyle. Whether it’s the beach, the park, or the world famous San Diego Zoo, you’ll never lack for something to do outdoors in your new city. Plus, every July, San Diego becomes the center of the film and pop culture universe when Comic Con takes over the city.

The School

Stafford House San Diego (formerly known as Intrax) school is located in the Gas Lamp neighborhood in downtown San Diego. Renovated in May 2016, our school has modern technology throughout and a roof terrace for student use. Shopping, restaurants and great nightlife are all nearby your English school. There is also quick access to many bus and trolley lines that will provide you access to many parts of the city.

Accommodation

Where you live is key to your happiness and academic success. Whether you prefer the independence of a student residence or the familiarity of homestay, our accommodation options are chosen to offer you the flexibility of choice and quality you deserve.

Homestay Accommodations

Living with an American family is a unique way to experience American traditions and culture first-hand. You will practice your English language skills with real Americans every day. If you would like to stay in a homestay, you are placed with a trusted family in the San Diego area. Each family is carefully screened and interviewed. We have single rooms or rooms with roommates. Families provide you with breakfast and dinner every week (14 meals). Most host families are located within 40-60 minutes of Stafford House Centers by public transportation.

Please note: You must give at least four weeks notice before you arrive so we can make sure your homestay is available and reserved. If you have any questions about living with an American family, you can contact the Housing Coordinator.

Residence Club Accommodations

When you choose to live in a Residence Club you will enjoy an independent living situation with an international atmosphere, dormitory-style housing and meal options or shared kitchen. Residence clubs also provide an opportunity to get to know students and travelers from all over the world.

Independent Housing Options

You can reserve your own accommodation, and there is a lot of choice! A Stafford House staff member has visited all of these places and we think they are great value and close to Stafford House. You can find more information about reservations on their websites. You must reserve them directly- we cannot book these for you.

Meet our team

All of our teachers hold teaching qualifications ranging from certificate to diploma level and are committed to continuous development and share our passion for learning with our students.

  • Alana Ritchison

    Student Advisor

    Alana is committed to enhancing the student experience and is responsible for Activities, Career Preparation and College Pathways. As a member of the front desk team, she is also available to offer general guidance on school and the local area. Alana loves working with international students and has been working in Education as a teacher and guidance counselor for ten years. Originally from the UK, Alana has also lived in Thailand and Taiwan before settling here in San Diego. 

  • Fernanda Crowe

    Center Director

    Fernanda Crowe had previously worked at the San Diego school from 2004 to 2014 when she took on a national role as Director of Student Experience – managing both the Academics and Student Services team.  She’s happy to be back in the center where she can interact more with students while still managing the Academics team. She is responsible for ensuring students receive a high quality education and enjoy their time at Stafford House. She loves seeing our students gain confidence in their English skills and make lifelong friends with classmates from all over the world.

  • Nicole Bollhalder

    Director of Studies & Curriculum Developer

    Nicole began as a teacher at Stafford House in 2010. She has taught English around the world and uses that experience to support our students and teachers in San Diego. 

  • Sarah Teigen

    Student Advisor

    Sarah works as a student advisor and helps coordinate housing for San Diego students. Sarah has her masters in International Education Management from Middlebury Institute of International Studies and is passionate about helping students enjoy their experience with Stafford House.

  • Vanessa Fennell

    Administrative Coordinator

    Vanessa has been working at the San Diego School since 2014 as the admininistrative coordinator helping students with  admissions, visa and program related services. As a former international student, with a Master Degree in comparative Law, Vanessa has a great understanding of students needs and she is always excited to help students to achieve their goals.

It takes more than English classes to learn a new language and our social programmes activities in San Diego provide that extra experience that is so crucial to fuel fluency. Our Activity Leaders are passionate about San Diego and Southern California and take students on activities designed to show off the special aspects of this great city, allowing students to fully immerse in, and experience, their new home.
