Stafford House, one of the best English schools in London
Stafford House was named one of the best English schools in London in the 2026–27 UK rankings
Choosing the best English school in London is a big decision. There are dozens of schools in the capital, and most of them promise great teachers and a friendly atmosphere. So how do you know which ones really deliver?
One of the most reliable answers comes from independent inspection. In EL Gazette’s 2026–2027 UK language centre rankings, Stafford House School of English, London scored 8.5 out of 10, a full point higher than last year. That makes our Bloomsbury school one of the best English schools in London, and EL Gazette named it one of this year’s “Rising stars”.
What are the EL Gazette rankings?
EL Gazette is a leading publication for the English language teaching industry. Every year it ranks UK language centres using British Council inspection reports, the most respected quality check in UK English teaching.
British Council inspectors assess schools across 15 areas, including teaching, academic management, course design, student welfare, accommodation and safeguarding for under-18s. Each area is marked as a strength, as meeting the standard, or as needing improvement. EL Gazette turns these results into a single score out of 10.
The 2026–27 table includes 96 institutions, from private language schools to universities and summer schools. Only centres with a strong inspection record make the list, so a place in the table marks a school as one of the best English schools in the UK.
Stafford House London: 8.5 out of 10, up a full point
Stafford House London moved from 7.5 last year to 8.5 in 2026–27. EL Gazette highlighted this jump in its “Rising stars” section, alongside our Canterbury school, which also climbed a full point to 8.5.
For students, that score reflects areas inspectors recognised as strengths, not just areas where we met the minimum standard. It means the quality of the school has been checked independently, rather than simply claimed.
A strong year across Stafford House
With three schools in the rankings, Stafford House is one of the best English school groups in the UK. London was not the only Stafford House school to stand out this year:
- Stafford House Canterbury scored 8.5 out of 10, up from 7.5, and was also named a Rising star.
- Stafford House Cambridge entered the rankings for the first time, with a score of 7.0.
All three schools are accredited by the British Council and welcome both adults and young learners.
How to choose the best English school in London
Rankings are a great starting point, but the best English school for you depends on your goals. Here are five things to check before you book:
- Accreditation. Make sure the school is accredited by the British Council. You can search all accredited centres and read their inspection reports on the British Council website.
- Independent scores. Look at the school’s inspection results or its EL Gazette score, not just its own marketing.
- Courses that match your goal. Do you need General English, exam preparation, Business English or a professional qualification?
- Location. A central school near good transport links makes it easier to get to class and explore the city.
- Accommodation and support. Check the homestay and residence options, and what help is available when you arrive.
